A Single Step
“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” ~Lao Tsu
My favorite way to see any city is on my own two feet. Cars and busses move too quickly for you to take a close look at anything. Bikes lend themselves to me falling on my face and shedding blood (never really mastered bike riding). So my feet it is.
The benefits of walking through a city are endless. You get amazing exercise, yes, but you can also see the city in detail. I love to stop and look at an interesting piece of architecture, a beautiful flower, or amazing street art. I may find myself on a small side street of picturesque homes, or wandering by a quiet river. More than once I’ve gotten lost and, instead of being frustrated by a lack of direction, I discover a perfect plaza or a tasty treat.
There have been days that I have walked 10, 12, or 15 miles without even noticing till I reach the end of the day with sore muscles and tired feet. Other than my camera, a good pair of shoes is my best friend when I travel. I have walked small towns from end to end, and wandered the length and breadth of large cities. I have climbed hills, stairs, and bridges. I have put my feet down and wandered paths in cities across the world. Every step is a potential adventure. Every step is a potential discovery.
But it isn’t about just putting one foot in front of the other. It’s about taking the time to look. To watch the world. To know when to stop as much as when to go. To take your time.
Don’t rush the world. It will still be there. See it instead.
What will you find when you walk out the door?
